Description

While instantly popular among diehard Porsche enthusiasts, just 174 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 Targas were produced the the US Market in 1975, making it one of the rarest production Porsche 911's ever built. Compared to lesser 911's, it featured more comprehensive equipment, amenities, and trim, including air conditioning, full leather interior, larger fuchs wheels, first year of the famed "whale tale" spoiler and of course the legendary "Carrera" script. The "Carrera" name has always been the preserve of extra-high performance Porsches, recalling the company's 1953 win in the mythical Mexican road race. It first appeared on a new four-cam 356 in 1955 and reappeared in 1972, but originally as a homologation special for Group 4 racing. Only 500 were built that first year, but every single one was snapped up within a week after its appearance at the Paris Auto Show in October 1972. Distinguished by its flared rear fenders, rear ducktail spoiler and prominent body side graphics, the Carrera and its 2.7L/210 HP flat-6 engine were the toast of sports racing around the world. U.S. bumper regulations forced a redesign for 1974, but designer Tony Lapine handled the challenge and in the process finalizing the transformation from litheness to the more muscular look embodied in this 1975 Carrera Targa. By the time of its production enough Carreras had been produced to qualify for Group 3; consequently only 174 U.S.-specification Carrera Targas were built in 1975, making these Porsches among the rarest built.
The Porsche COA confirms this has been a California car its whole life, includes CA smog equipment ordered. Carrera Targa #116 still wears its early 80's California plate and all service history dating back to '86, including its original factory owners manual. #116 was hand built in February '75, which the famed 2.7L Cal-Spec Carrera engine with its 5-speed 915/16 manual gearbox accompanies the car separately along with most of it's original parts, smog equip, original CIS, brakes, even exhaust! (Original engine turns, but more than likely will need a top end rebuild) Original speedometer shows only 61K miles and I believe this to be true with the service tag on door and service history supporting this. Currently, a strong running 3.0 litre venerable air-cooled flat-6 mated to a 5 speed gearbox is in the car, making it a fun and reliable driving Carrera, while not damaging the original drivetrain. The current motor is from an '83 Super Carrera and has recently received a top end rebuild about a year ago (have all receipts and records). Wearing its original 15x7 & 15x8 Fuchs wheels and "Whale Tail" spoiler introduced to replace the early ducktail units, also has its original glass and desirable blaupunkt frankfurt radio (not hooked up at this time). COA shows this car to be an original bitter chocolate car, said to be only 1 of 36 in the color combination. #116 has only has had one repaint back in '91 and is holding up very well (still has paint tag on pass. door from local paint shop), finished in Guards Red that characterizes this generation of Carrera, and completed by Black "Carrera" graphics and very original Caramel leather interior. Underneath appears to be all original and very dry, no rust found anywhere. Its rare factory air conditioning and Targa top add further value while taking nothing away from its breathtaking performance. These early Carrera's are continually on the rise, and only reason for sale, along with a number of cars in my collection is due to a real estate purchase Asking $45K OBO. Thanks for your interest.
